Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States, October 1, 1924 - December 29, 2024
Together with people around the world, CNWE members mourn the death of former US President and humanitarian Jimmy Carter. We also remember, honour and celebrate his life, and remember his advocacy for women’s equality in the religions of the world, and in society.
CNWE's Letter of Solidarity
In 2013, CNWE’s leadership at the time wrote a letter of solidarity to President Carter to share with him the story of CNWE and to thank him for his advocacy for women’s equality in religion. As President Carter stated at the time, “male religious leaders perpetuate misguided doctrines of male superiority”. Over a decade before, President Carter had made the decision to end his membership in the Southern Baptist Convention due to its exclusion of women from ministry.
Not too long after we sent our letter to President Carter, we received his handwritten response which you can see attached below, with a copy of the letter we wrote to him. Both of these items are preserved in CNWE’s archival deposit in Library and Archives, Canada in Ottawa.
The book that President Carter refers to in his comments is “A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power” and was published in 2014. You can learn more here:
May President Carter’s memory be for a blessing and may his prophetic work for peace, democracy, women’s equality in religion and society, housing and social justice for all, and care for creation live on.
